About our team:
- We are a team of seven within Brown’s Office of Information Technology.
- We develop and support the data environment that enables Brown’s institutional reporting and analytics.
- Our team has primary responsibility for Brown’s two enterprise BI platforms, IBM Cognos Analytics and Tableau Server.
- Our customers are administrators across the university.
- We use a variety of tools and platforms for BI and data warehouse development, including Cognos, Tableau, Snowflake, Oracle, Talend, and ER/Studio.

The Business Intelligence Developer/Lead Business Intelligence Developer is a member of the team responsible for Brown’s enterprise business intelligence and data warehouse (BI/DW) environment. The BI Developer or Lead BI Developer will design, develop, document, and support applications that enable institutional analytics, reporting, and decision-making.
Job Competencies
Grade 10: Business Intelligence Developer: (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
- 2 or more years of related IT work experience
- SQL proficiency (at least intermediate level skill), including ability to effectively query large and/or complex relational databases
- Proficiency developing analytics content for one or more BI platforms (esp. IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server)
- Skill in presenting data in a way that facilitates comprehension
- Strong critical and analytical thinking
- Propensity for self-directed learning
- Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people with differing levels of technical knowledge
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
- Displays willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
Grade 11: Lead Business Intelligence Developer: (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
- 5 or more years of related IT work experience
- Experience in a technical leadership role
- SQL proficiency (at least intermediate level skill), including ability to effectively query large and/or complex relational databases
- Proficiency developing analytics content for one or more BI platforms (esp. IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server)
- Skill in presenting data in a way that facilitates comprehension
- Strong critical and analytical thinking
- Propensity for self-directed learning
- Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people with differing levels of technical knowledge

Business Intelligence Developer, two of the following are required (more than two preferred).
Lead Business Intelligence Developer, four of the following are required.
- Experience working with higher education data
- Experience querying and/or extracting data from ERP systems (esp. Ellucian Banner, Workday)
- Experience with graphic design and UI/UX design
- Experience developing interactive dashboards
- Experience exploring data for insights
- Solid knowledge of statistics
- Experience using agile methodology (esp. Scrum)
- Experience using SDLC processes to deliver BI solutions
- Experience with analytics and programming languages (esp. Python)
- Experience with version control systems (esp. Git/GitHub)
- Experience with cloud-based data management (esp. Snowflake, Google Cloud Platform)
- Experience developing logical and physical data models (esp. using ER/Studio)
- Experience designing and developing ETL pipelines (esp. using Talend, ODI)
- Experience using RESTful API’s in data pipelines
Successful completion of a criminal background check and education verification is required.
