About the Opportunity:

Brown University’s School of Professional Studies (SPS) brings a Brown education to new audiences of learners: those focused on the development of skills and a breadth of knowledge necessary for professional success and leadership. We leverage Brown’s intellectual centers of excellence, rigorous teaching, and developmental approach to learning in a range of programs, including serving students outside of traditional degree programs. We partner with Brown departments, centers, institutes, and schools to develop degree and non-degree programs, and to support the recruitment, retention, and placement success of master’s students, including traditional, non-traditional, and professional students.

Responsibilities:

The Mindfulness Instructor at Brown University’s School of Professional Studies is responsible for teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and/or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). The position may also include teaching other courses related to MBSR or MBCT teacher training but is not required. The position may also involve providing instruction for other mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and mindfulness-based programs (MBPs) taught through the Brown University School of Professional Studies (SPS).

The candidate must be able to teach live-online as the majority of the mindfulness programming delivered by Brown University is taught online. However, the position may also offer opportunities for teaching in-person, including traveling to teach programs in a variety of off-site locations.

The position requires that the candidate maintain up-to-date knowledge of current mindfulness curricula and relevant evidence behind mindfulness practices; using this knowledge to create programmatic materials that support best practices, depth, and integrity in teaching. The candidate may also assist in the development of new and supplemental mindfulness programming, including the creation of asynchronous course materials, custom mindfulness programming, and the enhancement of existing course curricula.

Other responsibilities may include attending meetings, assisting with info sessions, and working with the broader SPS mindfulness team to meet program goals.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, education, social work, etc., or equivalent experience
  • Qualified MBSR and/or MBCT instructor; Certification is strongly preferred but not required
  • 2+ years teaching MBSR and/or MBCT or other MBPs
  • 5+ years experience with specific training and practice in mindfulness meditation, including experience with at least three (3) extended, intensive meditation training retreats; 2+ years of experience with mindful yoga
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver an array of Mindfulness-Based program curricula;
  • Highly skilled in all competencies to teach and train others in MBSR (and/or MBCT) and other mindfulness-based interventions
  • An ongoing mindfulness meditation practice of 5+ years
  • Experience in a university setting, preferred but not required
