Provost

Bucknell University

Bucknell University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost. Reporting directly to the President, the Provost will be a visionary, energetic, creative, and inspirational leader – with a proven track record of accomplishment and an entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit – to play a central role in shaping the success, growth, and future of the University and its residential liberal arts community. The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of the University, as well as the senior executive next to the President, and along with the faculty, they have full responsibility for the academic mission of Bucknell.

As the nation’s largest liberal arts university, Bucknell enrolls more than 3,900 undergraduates and 40 graduate students representing most U.S. states and 66 countries. Twenty-two percent of Bucknell students identify as students of color, and 3.5 percent are international students. The University awards bachelor’s degrees in 65 majors and 70 minors, including nine interdisciplinary programs. Approximately 62 percent of Bucknell’s students enroll in the College of Arts & Sciences, 20 percent in the College of Engineering, and 18 percent in the Freeman College of Management. Approximately 400 faculty and 900 staff support the University, and more than 56,000 proud graduates comprise a dedicated alumni network. The University has an operating budget of $236 million and a growing endowment fund that surpassed $1 billion for the first time in fiscal year 2021. Bucknell’s 450-acre campus is among the most beautiful in the country, and the University offers a competitive benefits package, including tuition remission.

The next Provost at Bucknell will lead faculty, associate provosts, and academic deans in advancing the goals and mission of the University, and they will provide leadership and vision in planning, developing, and implementing academic programs and ensuring the quality and growth of educational offerings and academic support functions. They will also be responsible for strategic planning; budget management; faculty leadership, development, and support; promotion and tenure; scholarly and curricular development and assessment; and efforts related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. The Provost will spearhead the development and delivery of academic programs that build upon the intersections between departments and among the University’s three colleges, while ensuring the independent disciplinary strengths of the individual academic units that form the core of Bucknell. The Provost serves as an ambassador for the University, in the Lewisburg community and across the nation, and they will engage and communicate with internal and external stakeholders about the value Bucknell offers to its students, faculty, alumni, and friends. The Provost will be a positive, motivating leader with a strong acumen for community building and supporting the faculty, staff, and students. Finally, the Provost will be a highly skilled administrator who embraces shared governance and a residential, liberal arts teaching and learning environment.

Bucknell is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse community and promotes all its members’ full participation and inclusion. Grounded in the belief that diversity challenges assumptions, opens minds, and unlocks collective potential to solve any problem, the Provost will share the University’s mission to create and sustain a campus community that welcomes, understands, supports, and celebrates diversity of all kinds.

An earned Doctorate or Juris Doctorate is required, as is significant experience in higher education, academic instruction, and administration. Academic credentials commensurate with the earned rank of Full Professor, along with a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship are also required. This is a full-time position that will be performed on site in Pennsylvania. Salary commensurate with experience with a generous benefits package.
