Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Carleton College

Carleton College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in computer science, to begin September 1, 2025. A Ph.D. completed by the start date is required. We welcome candidates with any specialization in computer science or a closely related field. Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women, gender-diverse individuals, disabled individuals, and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Carleton’s students are curious and enthusiastic. We seek an equally enthusiastic computer scientist committed to excellence in teaching, curriculum design, research, and undergraduate research advising. We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body. The appointee will teach courses at a range of levels, from introductory courses to advanced undergraduate electives. The typical teaching load is five courses spread over our three 10-week terms per year.

We value research and pedagogy that engage computer science in its many contexts, so we are enthusiastic about interdisciplinary teaching and research, civic partnerships, and discussion of the social impacts of technology. We cultivate a thriving and inclusive CS community that gets together for events with invited speakers, discussion and reading groups, and just to have fun together. There are several student-run organizations, which focus on diversity in computing, social justice and public interest technology, and software development.

Carleton’s Department of Computer Science (cs.carleton.edu) includes twelve tenure-track faculty, one part-time permanent lecturer, an administrative assistant, and an experienced full-time system administrator. We have recently had 70-90 CS majors per year, many of whom work for the department as teaching assistants, tutors, lab assistants, and graders. The CS department is in a newly renovated space within an integrated science center, including specially designed teaching labs and classrooms as well as dedicated space for student-faculty research collaboration.

Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.
