The Johns Hopkins University — Innovation and Design Teaching Faculty, Department of Biomedical Engineering

Innovation and Design Teaching Faculty  at the Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering

Teaching Professor Track: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Teaching Professor
Professor of the Practice Track: Associate/Assistant Professor of the Practice

Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is seeking a creative and motivated individual for a teaching track faculty position. The faculty member will co-instruct the department’s undergraduate design courses in the BME Design Team Program (https://www.bme.jhu.edu/academics/bme-design/undergraduate-design-team/) with an emphasis on developing and supporting biotechnology projects.

The BME Design Team is the premiere undergraduate healthcare design program in the #1 Biomedical Engineering program in the nation, with over 150 undergraduates and 50 clinicians involved each year. Student teams complete their projects in partnership with JHMI and outside healthcare providers, industry and community mentors. Our teams receive professional guidance from industry experts in intellectual property, regulatory strategy, and market access planning. Projects span all areas of medicine and all technology areas including both developed-world and global health applications.

Major responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching the engineering design process through workshop, lecture, and/or other methodologies
  • Managing and mentoring teams of engineering students in their projects (emphasis on projects in biotechnology)
  • Establishing and managing relationships with project partners from academia, industry, government and community

The faculty member will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to other BME programs, courses and initiatives appropriate for their expertise. Teaching faculty members are also encouraged to engage in departmental and university service and may have general advising/mentoring responsibilities.

Qualifications
A PhD, MS/MSE, or BS in an engineering discipline, or closely related field, is desired. The title for the position (Teaching Professor or Professor of the Practice track) will be determined by the degree and relevant experience. Candidates with medical product development experience, a demonstrated track record of innovation, translational or applied research are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching experience is required, either in the form of formal education in an academic setting or mentorship and talent development in an industrial setting.

The target of this faculty search is the Lecturer position, but highly qualified applicants may be considered at other levels. The Whiting School of Engineering has a well-established non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor.
