Kutztown University of Pennsylvania enrolls approximately 8,000 students in graduate and undergraduate programs. The University is located in the borough of Kutztown in a charming rural setting, and is within 20 minutes driving time of the diverse metropolitan areas of Allentown/Bethlehem and Reading, and within 60 minutes of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Department of Art & Design at Kutztown University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art and Frederick Douglass Institute (FDI) Scholar beginning fall semester 2024 with a focus in Drawing, 2D Design, 3D Design and/or related coursework. We seek candidates whose research, teaching and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse audiences in higher education, and particularly in Art. The successful candidate will exhibit a desire and preparedness to participate in the university’s campus culture committed to a diverse, equitable, and accessible environment championing the success of all members of the community. The candidate should demonstrate a potential for scholarly or creative activity that focuses on diversity and identity.

The University is interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. As an FDI scholar, the candidate

should possess a willingness to work collaboratively with faculty to

  • Engage in ongoing research, professional development, or creative activity that embraces or embodies the themes of diversity and identity.
  • Facilitate dialogue around issues of cultural diversity and identity.
  • Encourage awareness of cultural diversity and identity in the community.
  • Foster mutual understanding and mutual respect for diverse cultures.
  • Develop closer ties and collaboration among KU faculty and students with those in the PA State System of Higher Education. In recognition of this work, FDI scholars will receive a course release in the spring semester during years one and two of their appointment to pursue professional and scholarly development.

The candidate will foster interdisciplinary cross-campus relationships to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds as well as contribute to undergraduate teaching and advising; share expertise and innovative ideas in the development of undergraduate art programs; and connect with vibrant local, regional and state-level art communities. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, performance review and evaluation of faculty is based on effective teaching and fulfillment of professional responsibilities; continuing scholarly growth; and service.

Required: MFA in Art or a related field from an accredited institution conferred by the start of fall 2024 semester classes; 3 years teaching experience in higher education in art with a focus in Drawing, 2D Foundation Design, 3D Foundation Design and/or related coursework, and a strong professional portfolio of personal and student artwork.
