Position Overview:

This is a two-year term appointment. An extension is possible based on performance and the existence of funding.

The Intellectual Property (IP) Coordinator evaluates third party content identified by MIT faculty within their published online course materials, for compliance with IP guidelines for Open Learning. The IP Coordinator provides training to faculty and associated staff in copyright, fair-use and use of openly licensed materials. This individual maintains related IP databases and applications. The IP Coordinator reports to the Open Learning IP Manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Evaluate course material of MOOC’s which may contain IP objects owned or controlled by third parties.
  • Manage the IP clearance of MOOCs including reviewing content in coordination with MIT faculty members and course team members with the use of the Course Management System.
  • Train Course Teams about copyright and fair use based on Open Learning IP Policy, and the use of the CMS and IP portal application.
  • Create ongoing and customized statistical analysis IP reports which are presented to Management under the direction of the IP Manager.
  • Create and update IP documentation including copyright guides regarding attribution, license requests, and permission request opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills:

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience required.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills at all levels, including senior management, faculty, academic support staff, engineering, and technical staff.
  • Must accept personal responsibility for task fulfillment and job performance; must be self-motivating, professional, and comfortable with ambiguity in a diverse organization.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be well-organized, committed, accurate, thorough, and punctual, with meticulous attention to detail and follow-through.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in intellectual property in an academic setting.
  • Familiarity with MIT course structure and curriculum content.
  • Familiarity using relational databases with software such as QuickBase, Google Sheets and Excel.
  • Familiarity with file sharing software applications such as Dropbox and DocuSign.
  • Broad knowledge of instructional/educational technologies and related applications.

Salary range:  $65,000 – $75,000, final salary determined by MIT’s compensation team based on the skills and experience of the person hired.

The Intellectual Property Coordinator is required to work onsite a minimum of 2 days/week through August 2025. In September, this may increase to working onsite 3 days/week.

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a background check.
