The Department of Classics at New York University invites applications for a scholar in Roman History at the rank of Faculty Fellow, to begin September 1, 2025, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. This position is for one year, but is potentially renewable for up to three years in total.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. no earlier than five years before the date of appointment. The department has a strong commitment to excellence in both research and teaching, and we expect the successful candidate to be able to contribute on both fronts. The teaching load is 1-2: the courses to be taught will include a large introductory-level lecture course on the history of Rome down to the death of Caesar. An ability to teach courses on ancient political thought and other periods of Roman history will also be an advantage.

Application materials should include the following: an application letter, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample (c.8000 words). The application letter should contain (i) an account of your teaching philosophy, including ways in which you would seek to attract and support the broadest range of students, and (ii) a description of your research.
