Detailed Job Description
The Rochester Institute of Technology’s Department of Software Engineering invites applications for the position of Department Chair, to begin July 2024. The department is one of the academic units within the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT.

RIT has been a leader in the field of software engineering for decades: In the fall of 1996, RIT launched the first undergraduate software engineering program in the United States, and universities around the world have used the department’s curriculum as a model when developing their programs.

The department has grown to over 20 faculty, 6 staff, and approximately 700 students, which includes BS and MS programs in Software Engineering, as well as a Master of Science program in Data Science. Software Engineering is now the fourth largest undergraduate major at RIT. Faculty in the department participate in the college-wide PhD Program in Computing and Information Sciences, which has been ranked 57th in the U.S. by CSRankings (46th in the U.S. within the subdisciplines of Software Engineering and of Artificial Intelligence).

As RIT is one of the few universities in the world with a full academic department in Software Engineering, the role of the Department Chair is a unique opportunity for a computing professional to provide leadership across the field of software engineering internationally and to shape the future of research and educational programs. The department creates a unique environment and culture among faculty, staff, and students with a focus on software engineering and data science; an active student group, the Society of Software Engineers, creates a vibrant student community within the department.

With its portfolio of degrees, the department is at the forefront of research and education on how the field of software engineering intersects with data science and artificial intelligence. Given the scale and forward-looking perspective of the department in embracing the increasing importance of artificial intelligence for the computing field, the Department Chair will guide the direction of the discipline and prepare the next generation of computing professionals for this future.

Through research and teaching, the department advances the discipline and meets the rapidly growing need for software engineers and data scientists. There is a rich, collaborative environment for faculty research, both within the department and across the other departments and research centers within the college. A key responsibility of the Department Chair will be to lead the department in further expanding its research profile, and this position is an opportunity for a computing professional interested in establishing a legacy through recruiting and mentoring of junior faculty. The department engages in a wide range of research activities in software engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence, with strengths in empirical software engineering, human-in-the-loop machine learning, refactoring, secure software, software evolution, computational analysis of social media, program analysis, and privacy.

The Department of Software Engineering’s innovative Senior Design program, the participation of students in co-op experiences at companies, and the department’s industry advisory board all foster strong relationships between the department and industry, which the Department Chair cultivates and manages.

We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in contributing to a community committed to student centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and ethics; respect, diversity and pluralism; innovation and flexibility; and teamwork and collaboration. Select to view links to RIT’s core values, honor code, and diversity commitment.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and rank and is based on a ten month salary and administrative stipend. Administrators are encouraged to supplement their work
with additional summer assignments from externally funded grants, contracts, or special projects.
