The Position:
The Foundation Marketing & Communications Manager position will develop a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy with the Foundation Executive Director and implement an annual plan that supports and advances the Foundation’s mission and vision. This includes internal and external communications for a robust portfolio of marketing programs and activities: the design and production of high-quality collateral and tool kits and targeted marketing programs, webpages, events, and social media campaigns; the creation of consistent and dynamic internal/external public relations, communications, and website/social media content; and the development of strategically targeted, synergistic, clear, and concise messaging and branding.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design strategic, market-segmented, and multi-platform annual communications and marketing plans
- Develop all facets of the Foundation brand and ensure consistent execution across all communications, collateral, tool kits, programs, and events
- Develop targeted communications, campaigns, and events, including the stratification of the stakeholder base, to engage stakeholders (donors, prospective donors, SMCCCD leadership, retirees, faculty/staff, alumni, campus groups and departments, and students) in annual and planned giving, major gift activities, and other strategic development activities and goals
- Implement a comprehensive media relations plan to expand awareness of the Foundation and cultivate prospective donors throughout the San Mateo County service area
- Design and manage social media platforms and create a content strategy for the organization on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and other relevant social media platforms that could include custom social networks, crowdsourcing, and blogs
- Develop ideas and opportunities for feature articles, interviews, and presentations and produce all organizational communication materials, including e-newsletters, digital communications, annual reports, invitations and mailings, and program flyers
- Create consistent, dynamic, and compelling internal/external communications, campaign case statements, talking points, and press releases
- Redesign, build, and maintain website content to effectively communicate information and ideas and serve the needs of stakeholders, including donors, prospective donors, alumni, SMCCCD retirees, faculty/staff, program participants, community partners, and students
- Pursue an integrated marketing approach by working closely with the District and the Skyline College, Cañada College, and College of San Mateo marketing and outreach teams, including collaborating with social media managers across the campuses to coordinate and enhance social media content, build a consistent voice, and grow audience reach and engagement
- Develop reports on stakeholder engagement to support short-term and long-term planning, including trend analyses, ROI goals, metrics, and other measurement tools
- Generate relevant stewardship activities that will increase donor and other stakeholder engagement. Track and measure the level of engagement across all channels, including click rates of website visits, e-mail click-throughs, social media sharing, and more
- Remain informed about the Foundation’s market position, monitor marketing and communication strategies of competing institutions, and spot trends and developments
- Plan, direct, and coordinate periodic surveys that gauge the Foundation’s reputation among prospective donors, alumni, parents, employers, business, government, civic, and foundation leaders, and other important external constituencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, or a closely related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3+ years of successful work experience with increasing responsibility in an organizational communications/marketing setting, with hands-on experience in communications strategy and marketing, preferably in the nonprofit setting
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

- Effective strategies, techniques, and procedures used in market-segmented communications and marketing
- Available media, community, vendor, contractor, and business resources for use in developing, preparing, distributing, and evaluating the results of marketing initiatives and communications activities
- Higher education, nonprofit fundraising, collegiate and donor demographics, and all applicable policies and procedures
- Graphic design and software functionality to create multi-platform marketing materials
- Exceptional detailed- and results-oriented written communication skills, including the use of various writing styles and proofreading and copy-editing
- Superior verbal communication skills with a track record in public speaking and media relations
- Proven ability to interpret and translate business strategies into creative, effective, compelling, and high-quality marketing campaigns that create fundraising results

- Strong leadership skills with the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, serve as a unifying force to solicit full participation and contribution of donor-related content from staff to volunteers across multiple programs, functions, and sites, and supervise staff
- Ability to create the look and feel of web pages, social media posts, and videos, including creating or managing graphic design that effectively communicates the ideas being promoted (layout and organization of the site, types of colors or images, and other matters concerning overall graphic design)
- Demonstrated skill in website and social media management, promotional materials production, and event development and implementation
- Experience with MS Office Suite, graphic design software (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, etc.), customer relations management systems, online marketing platforms, AI, and related tools
- Ability to design, implement, and report on metrics to evaluate, quantify, and analyze the ROI and effectiveness of marketing strategies and campaigns
