Position Description:
The Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenured/tenure-track, Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor to begin September 1, 2024.

About the College:
As one of the four original colleges at Texas Tech University at its founding in 1925, the College of Human Sciences (COHS) has a rich history of investing in students, preparing them to impact the world around them. The College of Human Sciences provides multidisciplinary education, research, and service focused on individuals, families, and their environments to improve and enhance the human condition. The College offers a wide range of outstanding and nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs and encompasses seven academic departments. In further supporting its vision of providing premier research, outreach, and educational programs that enhance human well-being worldwide, the COHS is also home to six centers and five institutes. When they graduate, our students are making an impact as educators, healthcare professionals, financial planners, hospitality managers, fashion merchandisers, designers, counselors, and nutrition experts. We are a destination for health and human sciences.

About the Department/School/Area:
The Department of Nutritional Sciences is committed to educating future leaders in nutritional sciences, and promoting basic, translational, clinical, and community research and teaching excellence. The Department consists of 20 full time faculty positions. NS faculty also have the opportunity to teach our growing graduate programs of 142 students in doctoral and master’s degrees and dietetic internship and undergraduate program of 654 students across our majors, minors, and concentrations. We offer several infrastructure and collaborative resources within the department and College of Human Sciences (COHS) and the Texas Tech System:

  • The Department of Nutritional Sciences, in the COHS, has several faculty members with strong basic, clinical/translational and community research programs focusing on obesity and co-morbid conditions such as diabetes or cancer, clinical nutrition, nutritional biochemistry, adipocyte biology, food insecurity, and community and international level interventions.
  • The Department of Nutritional Sciences offers two Bachelor’s degrees, three Masters degrees (including an online MS in nutrition and dietetics and another online MS in Nutrition), and a face-to-face MS or a PhD degree. It has a strong program with a Nutrition/Dietetics undergraduate option and a Dietetic Internship/Master’s Degree Program that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Other undergraduate options are Pre-professional Health Careers; and Secondary Teacher Certification in Hospitality, Nutrition, and Food Science.
  • Our Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI), a 12,000 Sq.ft state of the art clinical research and treatment facility is focused on expanding our clinical research facilities and faculty to support our mission to become a nationally recognized clinical research institution.
  • The faculty in the Department of Nutritional Sciences are involved in a number of clusters within Texas Tech University including the Obesity Research Institute
  • Nutritional Sciences faculty collaborate with the TTU International Center for Food Industry Excellence (ICFIE)  to provide innovation, research, and technology transfer throughout all aspects of the food continuum to meet today’s consumer needs, domestically and internationally (http://www.depts.ttu.edu/icfie/home.php).
  • NS faculty teach classes that are part of an online global food security graduate program.
  • The Texas Tech University Health Science Center, which is home to a medical and a nursing school offers a wide range of collaborative opportunities in health sciences.

Major/Essential Functions:
In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

  1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, face-to-face and online.
  2. Mentor MS and PhD students and assist in recruitment of graduate students.
  3. Develop and maintain a high impact scholarly research program in community nutrition, public health, or a related area, via publications and external funding.
  4. Develop research collaboration both within and across disciplines in order to develop interdisciplinary research teams.
  5. Engage in outreach activities and perform service to the department, college, university, and the profession including involvement and leadership in professional associations.

Required Qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate in community nutrition, public health, dietetics or related disciplines.
  2. Demonstrated record of effective teaching at the college level, commensurate with rank.
  3. Demonstrated record of receiving extramural research grants, commensurate with rank.
  4. Demonstrated record of collaborative research projects in community nutrition or public health.
  5. Demonstrated record of peer reviewed publications, commensurate with rank.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Demonstrated ability to utilize learning management systems including online course delivery.
  2. Leadership within the area of discipline and profession.
  3. Experience with implementing and evaluating community outreach programs such as extension services in the United States
  4. Experience with implementing and evaluating community outreach programs such as extension services in Texas
  5. Extramural funding received as principal investigator, commensurate with rank.
  6. Peer reviewed publications in capacity as principal author (first or last author or corresponding author), commensurate with rank.
  7. Peer review publications in high visibility journals, commensurate with rank.
  8. Impactful and independent contribution to the field of expertise as demonstrated by h index, manuscript citations, impact on community health, or similar measures, commensurate with rank.
