Assistant Professor – Computer Science

Trinity University

The Computer Science department is seeking tenure-track appointments for the rank of Assistant Professor for a candidate with a strong record of teaching, research, and service. The area of research is open to all fields of computer science, however, the department is especially interested in candidates with an emphasis on computer systems and cybersecurity. Successful applicants will be expected to be an excellent teacher and mentor, pursue a vigorous research program, contribute to all levels of the computer science curriculum, contribute to the University’s general curriculum, and provide service to the department and University. Further, a successful candidate should demonstrate an understanding of liberal arts education, of the role of computer science within that education, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Trinity University is a top-ranked small private liberal arts and sciences university that values high quality undergraduate teaching and supports high impact undergraduate research. Undergraduate enrollment is approximately 2400, including students from all areas of the United States and many foreign countries. Trinity has highly selective admission standards, and is becoming one of the nation’s highest quality primarily undergraduate institutions. Trinity’s principal focus is on undergraduate education, though there are select Masters programs. In addition to robust liberal arts and sciences, Trinity has departments in Business, Engineering, and Education, affording an interesting mix of students as well as opportunities for faculty collaboration. Further encouraging collaboration, the Computer Science department is housed in the Center for the Sciences and Innovation (CSI), housing all of the STEM fields and Entrepreneurship. University priorities include the development of critical and creative thinking skills, excellence in written and spoken communication, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary research and courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Capability to excellently teach courses in the computer science department, especially courses that require increased capacity as our number of majors increases. Teaching load is typically 2-3 courses per semester, and most courses have fewer than 25 students.
  • Perform scholarship that meets the current departmental criteria for promotion and tenure, which includes research and/or creative endeavors, including the production of software.
  • Embrace teaching in a liberal arts environment, including a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. Opportunities exist to teach in our general education curriculum.
  • A commitment to advising and mentoring Trinity students, and involving students in their scholarship.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in computer science and at Trinity.
  • Demonstrate and model good communication skills, including an ability to write and speak clearly, accurately, and effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Required: A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field

EXPERIENCE

Preferred: Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate level computer science courses
