The University of Chicago invites applications for an Instructional Professor in the Department of History. This is a full-time teaching position. The initial appointment will be for no less than three years to begin in Academic Year 2025-26 and is renewable, with opportunity for progression. Appointment at rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Instructional Professor will be considered based on the candidate’s experience. The salary is competitive and includes benefits. This position will be part of the SEIU bargaining unit.
This role will support the Department of History’s undergraduate Thesis and Capstone Seminar sequences and expand the Department’s methodological course offerings. The ideal candidate will have experience mentoring historical research and writing at the undergraduate level and expertise in an alternative methodology or approach to historical work, such as (but not limited to) public history or digital humanities. The successful candidate will teach six courses distributed over three quarters: the Thesis Seminar sequence (3-4 courses annually); the Historiography seminar (1-2 courses annually); and a methods seminar in their area of expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in ongoing assessment and development of the Department’s undergraduate methodology courses, assist in mentoring Thesis and Capstone track students, coordinate the instructional staff in the Thesis and Capstone Seminar sequence, and contribute to the administrative functioning of the Thesis and Capstone tracks.
Candidates must have a record of undergraduate teaching experience, with an emphasis on teaching and mentoring independent undergraduate research.
