The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Lecturer or Professor of Practice. Applicants with significant industry or government experience who also possess a record of effective teaching may be considered for the rank of Professor of the Practice. This full-time position will begin in Spring 2024 and will have teaching and administrative responsibilities at the UMBC campus at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science, data science or a closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will also have evidence of strong administrative skills.

Experience in academia, industry and government will be considered. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply and should emphasize their industry experience.

This position is renewable for a period of one to five years, depending on rank and performance. Teaching faculty cover a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They have administrative duties, advise students and mentor teaching assistants. Teaching faculty are expected to continue their professional growth with opportunities for increased responsibilities. Lecturers can be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.

The CSEE Department is large and growing, with a diverse community of over 2,000 undergraduate students. Teaching faculty along with a cadre of tenure-track faculty are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. To accommodate our diverse community, we offer instruction in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modes, with face-to-face instruction preferred.

CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to increase the diversity of those who create technology with programs designed for students from underrepresented groups. The department has graduate programs in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity, and data science. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.

While the work location is at The Universities at Shady Grove campus in Montgomery County, Maryland, the successful candidate will be an integral part of the CSEE department, enjoying full privilege and benefits as faculty colleagues at the Catonsville campus.  The Catonsville campus is located on 500 acres just off I-95 between Baltimore and Washington DC, and less than 10 minutes from the BWI airport and Amtrak station. The Catonsville campus includes the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park, which has special programs for startups focused on cybersecurity, clean energy, life sciences, and training. We are surrounded by one of the largest concentrations of commercial, cultural and scientific activity in the nation. Located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore has all the advantages of modern, urban living, including professional sports, major art galleries, theaters and a symphony orchestra. The city’s famous Inner Harbor area is an exciting center for entertainment and commerce. The nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is a great tourist attraction with its historical monuments and museums.
