The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Drama invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Devised Theater and Directing. We seek a process driven, community building artist-educator with a robust practice in devised theatre, ensemble-based creation and directing for the stage. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to experimental processes, inclusive storytelling in the tradition of companies The Open Theatre, The Living Theatre, The Wooster Group, and others.
A resume that includes improvisation, immersive and environmental work in multiple venues is desired. Highly competitive candidates will have a working knowledge non-Western Theatre practices and pedagogies.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate BFA courses in devising, directing, and collaborative creation, and guide 3rd- and 4th-year students through a pedagogical and curricular arc in devising work.
- Advise directing thesis projects
- Direct departmental productions and mentor student-led creation labs or workshops
- Maintain an active creative practice with a national and/or international visibility
Qualifications:
- MFA or equivalent professional experience in directing, devised theatre, or related fields.
- Significant experience creating original, collaboratively developed theatre work.
- A directing portfolio that reflects a range of aesthetics, forms, voices and risk-taking.
- Experience teaching at the university level preferred but not required.
