About the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences
The School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences brings together innovative research, student training, and community outreach in a climate that fosters collaboration and learning. The School’s mission is to understand the intersection of mind, brain, and behavior; enhance the health, education, and quality of life of children and families; and create and implement technologies and therapies that repair and strengthen human abilities. These goals are accomplished by recruiting and supporting outstanding faculty who have a commitment to groundbreaking research and to mentoring the next generation of researchers and professionals.

The School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences offers excellent educational programs at all levels, including carefully designed courses and ample opportunities for mentoring in research laboratories and internship settings. The School offers five undergraduate degree programs, four master’s of science programs, four doctoral degree programs, and two clinical programs. 

Individual degree programs maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with area schools, healthcare facilities, private practices, and community agencies, which contribute to training and research, and provide valuable community outreach to local agencies, allowing them to expand services. Driven by research prowess, academic rigor, and renowned professors, enrollment in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences continues to grow. As the student base grows, so does the School’s network of alumni in research, teaching, and professional positions across the country.

Given the growth of the educational programs, faculty, student population, and research portfolio, the School organized into three departments in 2020. Each department has a Department Head which oversees several Program Heads. The departments are home to many of the School’s faculty and non-faculty professionals holding research, clinical, and educational positions:

  • Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing.

Focused on the intersection of mind, brain, and behavior, the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences is committed to translating the latest research into treatment and intervention that add depth to education and provide valuable community service. In keeping with the University’s strategic initiative to “become one of the nation’s best public research universities,” the School’s researchers are regularly awarded grants from some of the most prestigious science organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Faculty within the School rank 2nd of the seven Schools at UT Dallas in research funding per faculty member.

The School has 123 faculty members, of which 70 are tenure track and 53 are non-tenure track.  There are 38 staff members, approximately 2,500 undergraduate students, and 600 graduate students. The Dean will oversee an annual operating budget of $31 million. Research expenditures were $35.8 million in FY 2023. The Dean’s leadership team includes an Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, an Associate Dean of Graduate Education, and an Associate Dean of Administration.

The University of Texas at Dallas seeks an exceptional leader to serve as its next Dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Reporting to and working with the Provost, and in coordination with the deans of other Schools, the Dean will have responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support the mission and vision of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences and its role within UT Dallas. 

The Dean will:

  • Lead the strategic planning efforts for the school, utilizing a collaborative process involving department heads, center directors, and key stakeholders. Define and execute a strategic vision for the future by articulating the distinctive needs and opportunities of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences;
  • Support and model a collaborative, positive, and entrepreneurial culture where colleagues engage in the activities of teaching, research, and clinical service; 
  • Serve as a public voice for the School’s constituents;
  • Attract external funding from federal agencies, corporations, foundations, and donors to support the School’s mission. Develops relevant partnerships;
  • Along with department heads, center directors, and faculty leaders, assure the continued prominence of the faculty by prioritizing the recruitment and retention of distinguished faculty which will promote and enhance a strong research agenda and inspire excellence in teaching and learning;
  • Identify emerging opportunities for new programs and interdisciplinary initiatives; 
  • Advocate internally for resources (personnel, space, etc.) to support a growing research agenda, faculty, and student population.

The successful candidate will have the highest commitment to academic and scholarly standards.  As an accomplished scholar, compelling candidates will be able to inspire faculty and students with a sense of pride and purpose, serve as an innovative leader to grow and build high quality programs, and provide a dedicated and established commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education.

  • Impeccable personal and professional integrity.

The Dean should possess an earned Ph.D. in a field related to the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences and possess a record of recognized achievement in teaching, research, and service that would warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of professor in the School.
