Position Summary
The Department of History at Whitworth University seeks a dynamic and engaged scholar-teacher to serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History beginning in Fall 2025. The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, all rooted in the university’s mission of equipping students to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity. This one-year position is designed for a candidate who is passionate about engaging students, advancing the discipline of history, and contributing to Whitworth’s vibrant academic community.
Core Responsibilities
Primary teaching responsibilities include world history surveys, additional survey courses in their areas of specialization for both majors and non-majors that meet the needs of the university’s Shared Curriculum program, and upper-division courses for History and History/Social Studies majors. The department seeks applicants with one of the following areas of geographic concentration: Europe, Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East. Area of thematic and methodological specialization is open. The annual teaching load is 21 credits.
The ability to contribute to Whitworth’s many interdisciplinary programs, including but not limited to the Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Latin American Studies, Environmental Studies, and/or the Women’s and Gender Studies programs is also a plus.
The faculty member will establish and maintain viable research and professional activities including state, regional, and national professional associations. Participation in departmental and university-wide governance, faculty development activities, and academic advising is also expected.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- A Ph.D. in History or a closely related field is preferred (ABD candidates may be considered).
- Evidence of promise in effectiveness at college-level teaching (demonstrated effectiveness preferred).
- Specialization in one of the following geographic areas: Europe, Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment.
- Demonstrated capacity to work across disciplines and collaborate with colleagues in different programs.
- A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
- Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities, and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives.
- A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth as a Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.

Term: 9 months (academic year) Contract starts July 1, 2025 and ends June 30, 2026
Salary: $59,572 – $63,718 (a 1.75% increase to the minimum listed salary is granted for each year of
credited service at the rank of Assistant Professor.)
