Said Sewell Named Eleventh President of Morris College in South Carolina

Dr. Sewell is a three-time HBCU graduate with an extensive background in HBCU leadership, most recently serving as chief academic officer at the Atlanta University Center Consortium. He has held previous executive leadership roles with Morehouse College, Lincoln University, and Fort Valley State University.

Dr. Nasim has spent the past 15 years with Virginia Commonwealth University, currently serving as vice president and senior advisor to the president, as well as a full professor of psychology and African American studies.

Mark Brown to Be the First Alumnus to Serve as President of Tuskegee University in Alabama

On July 1, Dr. Mark Brown will assume the presidency of his undergraduate alma mater, Tuskegee University in Alabama, making him the first alumnus to serve in the position. He currently serves as the inaugural president and CEO of the Student Freedom Initiative.

Betty Stewart Appointed Executive Vice President and Provost of Hampton University

“I hope to cultivate a culture of care and support within our university community, advocating for the success and happiness of students, faculty, and staff alike,” said Dr. Stewart. She will assume her position as provost of Hampton University on July 1.

Beverly Walker-Griffea to Lead the Department of Lifelong Education in Michigan

Dr. Walker-Griffea has been serving as the first woman and first African American president of Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. She has significant experience in community college leadership, having held academic and administrative posts at schools across the country.

Tuajuanda Jordan to Retire From the Presidency of St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Dr. Jordan has led St. Mary's College of Maryland for the past 10 years. She has previously held faculty and leadership positions with Xavier University of Louisiana, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Lewis & Clark College.

Ronald S. Rochon Named President of California State University, Fullerton

Dr. Rochon has been serving as president of the University of Southern Indiana, where he has worked for the past 14 years. Prior to his promotion to president in 2018, he served as the university's provost for eight years.

Tyrone Jackson Appointed President of Southeast Arkansas College

Currently, Dr. Jackson serves as president of Mississippi Delta Community College. He has over three decades of experience in higher education, previously holding leadership positions with Delta State University, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and Hinds Community College.

Jennifer Wallace Elected President of the Association of Teacher Educators

Dr. Wallace's appointment makes her the first alumna and employee of a historically Black college or university to serve as the association's president. She is an alumna of both Alcorn State University and Jackson State University, where she currently teaches in the College of Education.

Tia Minnis Named Provost at Virginia State University

After holding the position on an interim basis for the past year, Dr. Minnis has been selected as the permanent provost and vice president for academic affairs at Virginia State University. She has worked for the historically Black university for the past seven years.

Roscoe Jones Jr. Becomes First-Ever Black Dean at Drake University

Roscoe Jones Jr. has been appointed dean of the Drake University Law School, making him the first-ever Black dean across all schools at Drake University. Jones currently serves as a practicing attorney in Washington D.C., and as an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law school.

Alicia Fontnette Appointed Executive Director of the National Council for Black Studies

The National Council for Black Studies has selected Alicia Fontnette as the organization's executive director. Dr. Fontnette is an assistant professor in the department of African studies at the University of Delaware, which will serve as the council's new headquarters.

Darrin Martin Is the New Leader of Bluefield State University in West Virginia

Dr. Martin is a third-generation graduate of Bluefield State as both his mother and grandmother are alumnae. He has been serving as an associate professor of education, dean of academic support, and, director of graduate education studies.

Glenda Glover Will Step Down as President of Tennessee State University in 2024

Francine Conway Named Chancellor of Rutgers University-New Brunswick

Francine Conway is the new chancellor of the flagship campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She has led Rutgers–New Brunswick under the hybrid title of “chancellor-provost” for the past two years. The separation of responsibilities between chancellor and provost mirrors the leadership structures of Rutgers’ other campuses.

Dr. Carter began her career at Central Texas College 32 years ago as a receptionist. Most recently, she has served as deputy chancellor of finance and administration. When she takes office on July 1, she will be the first woman and the first African American to lead the college.

New ACE Report Presents Data on College Presidents Who Are Black

The American Council on Education report finds that the college presidency remains older, White, and male. But, Blacks or African Americans were 13.6 percent of college or university presidents, approximately equal to the percentage of Blacks in the U.S. population.
