In Memoriam: Byrdie Annette Larkin, 1952-2019
Dr. Larkin joined the faculty at Alabama State University in 1977. At the time, she was the only women faculty member in the department of political science. She taught at the university for 39 years until her retirement in 2016.
Four African Americans Who Have Announced Their Retirements From University Posts
The four African Americans who have retired or have announced their retirements are Tommie Stewart at Alabama State University, Adolph Reed Jr. at the University of Pennsylvania, Walter Fluker at the School of Theology at Boston University, and Alfreda Horton at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Alabama State University to Expand Preschool Opportunities for the State’s Children
The agreement provides for some students in the local Head Start program to attend the university's Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center. As part of this new partnership, early childhood education students at Alabama State will have the opportunity to work with Head Start families.
In Memoriam: Kavin Grant, 1981-2019
Kavin Grant, an associate professor of dance at Alabama State University, recently was killed in a car accident. Earlier in his career, he taught at West Chester University, Temple University, Penn State, the University of the Arts, the University of Akron, Rowan University, Muhlenberg College, and Jackson State University.

In Memoriam: Percy J. Vaughn, Jr., 1932-2018
Percy J. Vaughn, Jr. was the founding dean of Alabama State University's College of Business Administration. He joined the faculty at the university in 1975 and served as a professor of marketing until his retirement 35 years later in 2010.
Alabama State University’s New Partnership With the U.S. Veterans Affairs Acquisition Academy
The partnership will provide the university with access to the United States Defense Acquisition University curriculum which they will use to offer a new course on acquisition and contracting to its undergraduate students by spring 2019 and a certificate program in acquisition, contracting, and logistics by fall 2020.
A Handwritten Letter by Rosa Parks Has Been Donated to Alabama State University
In January 1957, the home of Rev. Bob Graetz and his wife Jeannie, a White couple who were both very active in the civil rights movement in the city, was bombed. Rosa Parks, who lived across the street wrote a letter describing that incident. The letter has now been donated to Alabama State University.

On February 25, 1960, a group of Black students at Alabama State University participated in a sit-in at a racially segregated lunch counter at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Nine were expelled. Now the state has expunged the records of those disciplined in 1960.

A New Degree Program in Theatre and Drama at Norfolk State University
Historically Black Norfolk State University in Virginia will offer a new bachelor's degree program in theatre and drama. Up to now, the university has offered a bachelor's degree in English with concentrations in theatre performance and theatre technology.

Alabama State University has named its College of Business Administration to honor Percy J. Vaughn Jr. Dr. Vaughn was recruited to establish the College of Business Administration in 1975. He served as dean for 35 years until his retirement in 2010.

Dr. Ross is an Alabama State Senator. He also has served as director of adult education at Trenholm State Technical College in Montgomery. Dr. Ross was a finalist for president of Alabama State in 2013.

A Change in Leadership at Alabama State University in Montgomery
By a vote of 8-6, the board of trustees of Alabama State University voted to suspend Gwendolyn Boyd from her position as president of the university. President Boyd was charged with "failure to maintain the confidence of the board." Provost Leon Wilson was named interim president.

A Trio of African Americans Appointed to Positions as Deans
The new deans are Amanda Bryant-Friedrich at the College of Graduate Studies of the University of Toledo in Ohio, Cheryl Easley at the College of Health Sciences at Alabama State University, and James D. Anderson at the College of Education of the University of Illinois.
