In 1972, Dr. Simmons co-founded what would become Sojourner-Douglas College in Baltimore. Named for Black abolitionist leaders Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass, the college was not officially designated as an HBCU, but enrolled a predominately Black student body. It closed its doors in 2016 after losing its accreditation.

Stanton joined Wesleyan in 2007 as an associate professor of dance. She served as chair of the department for two three-year terms and is currently serving as dean of the Arts and Humanities. Earlier in her career, she taught at Ohio State University.

Dr. Edney was a long-time faculty member who served as both acting president and interim president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi.
