Six Black Academics Appointed to New Faculty Positions

The faculty appointments are Raymond Wise at Indiana University, Kirsten Greenidge at Boston University, Karen Mainess at Loma Linda University, Donica Hadley at James Madison University, Malcolm Merriweather at Brooklyn College, and Hope Wabuke at the University of Nebraska.

In Memoriam: Milfred C. Fierce, 1937-2023

In July 1969, Fierce became the first director of the  Urban Center for Black Studies at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The center with offices in downtown Poughkeepsie, two miles from the pristine campus of the liberal arts college, had a community focus.

School of Journalism & Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University Names Its Next Dean

Mira Lowe, a veteran journalist and editor, has been assistant dean for student experiences at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications since 2019. Before entering academia, Lowe enjoyed a successful career as a professional journalist.

In Memoriam: Julia A. Miller, 1928-2021

In 1970 Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, established the Black Studies Center. Dr. Miller was the founding associate director. Within two years she became the director. She served in that role until 1984.

In Memoriam: Paule Marshall, 1929-2019

Paule Marshall taught at both Virginia Commonwealth University and New York University. She authored numerous novels, essays, and works of short fiction.

Sheilah Paul to Lead the New School of Education at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn

Medgar Evers College, a campus of the City University of New York, has announced the establishment of the School of Education. The college enrolls about 6,800 students. African Americans make up more than three quarters of the student body. Dr. Sheilah M. Paul was named founding dean.

Paul Beatty Wins the 2016 Man Booker Prize

Paul Beatty, who teaches at Columbia University in New York, is not only the first African American to win the distinguished award, he is the first American to do so.

In Memoriam: Gloria Naylor, 1950-2016

Naylor, who taught creative writing at several universities, was best known for her her 1982 novel The Women of Brewster Place, for which she won the National Book Award for the best first novel.

Roland Anglin Named Dean of the College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University

Dr. Anglin has been serving as senior adviser to the chancellor and director of the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies at the Newark, New Jersey, campus of Rutgers University. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago.

Six Black Scholars Taking on New Faculty Assignments

They are: Theodore Greene at Bowdoin College, Cherif Keita at Carelton College, Mumba Mumba at Lewis and Clark Community College, Anthony E. Clement at Brooklyn College, Eliza Allen at the University of South Carolina, and Kafi D. Kumasi at Wayne State University.
