“Even in this arduous higher ed environment, the faculty and staff of Cal Lutheran are brilliantly resilient for the sake of our students,” said President Nunes. “We are committed to being a place where dreams take flight.”
The study authors write, "Addressing the social determinants of health factors unique to Black women will not only increase mammography screening and improve breast cancer outcomes for this population but may lessen the economic burden that disparate health outcomes create."
Dr. Nunes assumed the interim presidency of California Lutheran University on June 1. He will serve in that position for a two-year term. Previously, he served as president of Concordia College in New York for five years.
Taking on new roles are Garrett L. Washington at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Marjuyua Lartey at the University of Southern Mississippi, Darius Young at Florida A&M University, LaTasha Barnes at Arizona State University, and Gregory K. Freeland at California Lutheran University.
About 45 percent of California Lutheran University’s traditional undergraduate students from the United States identify themselves as Latino, black, American/Alaskan native or multiracial.

The four Black women in new faculty posts are Nomsa E. Geleta at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Sheridan Wigginton at California Lutheran University, Sharon A. Brangman at the Sunny Upstate Medical University, and Helen Elaine Lee at MIT.
