“Higher education remains one of California’s most powerful equity levers for expanding economic opportunity, earning potential, and upward mobility,” the report authors write. “However, the full promise of higher education can only be achieved when Black students are equipped with the resources, support, and institutional commitment to thrive.”
Samuel L. Hinton and Dilcie D. Perez are taking on new leadership roles in student success at South Carolina State University and the California State University System, respectively. Robert E. Gaddy, Jr. is chief of police at North Carolina Central University.
Dr. Blanchard has served as president of the University of Houston-Downtown for the past five years. He is slated to assume the presidency of California State University, Long Beach on May 1.
Under Assembly Bill 7, California-based colleges and universities could provide admissions preferences to applicants of any racial background who can prove they are descended from someone who was enslaved in the United States prior to 1900. The bill is currently awaiting final approval from Governor Gavin Newsom.
