“We are not running from the term [Dixie],” Utah Tech University President Shane Smeed told The Salt Lake Tribune. “We are embracing Utah Tech University and inviting members of the community from the past, present and future to unify. It’s important to me that we build unity with our community.”

The board of trustees at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, voted unanimously to ask the Utah Board of Higher Education to change the name of the educational institution.

The appointees are Jeffrey Jones at Cheyney University, Tasha Toy at Dixie State University, Ashley Robsinson at Jackson State University, Dexter I. Odom at Fort Valley State University, B. Sherrance Russell at Central State University, and Brent Swinton at Bowie State University.

Dixie State University in Utah used to have a Rebel as its mascot and then changed the names of its athletic teams to the Red Storm. Now the university's teams will be known as the Trailblazers and its mascot will be Brooks the Bison.

Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, has returned a statue depicting two Confederate soldiers, a Confederate flag, and a horse to the original artist.
