In Memoriam: Colleen J. McElroy, 1935-2023

In 1983, Dr. McElroy became the first Black woman to serve as a full-time faculty member at the University of Washington. From 1995 to 2007, Professor McElroy served as editor of The Seattle Review, a literary magazine based at the university.

LaTonia Collins Smith Is the New President of Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis

Dr. Colllins Smith has been serving as interim president since last summer. Before being named interim president, Dr. Collins Smith had been serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university. She has been on the staff at the university since 2010.

In Memoriam: Henry Givens Jr. 1931-2021

Dr. Givens served as president of Harris Stowe for 32 years until his retirement in 2011. Under his leadership, the university tripled its student population, grew from one building with only one degree to eight facilities and 14-degree programs.

Dr. Collins Smith is serving as interim president of the historically Black university in St Louis. She had been serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Collins Smith began her career in higher education at Harris-Stowe State University in 2010 as a project coordinator in the Office of Counseling Services.

Historically Black Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis Partners With a Community College

The new partnership will allow St. Charles Community College and Harris-Stowe State University to jointly recruit students into a special program shared between the institutions. Student participants will have student privileges at both institutions.
