The National Science Foundation reports that between 2002 and 2011, 9,202 Blacks received doctorates in science and engineering fields. Howard University in Washington, D.C., was the leading undergraduate feeder institution for Blacks who earned doctorate in these fields.

Howard University To Develop and Test New Drugs in Africa
Howard University in Washington, D.C., has signed a partnership agreement with TNI BioTech Inc. of Bethesda, Maryland. Under the agreement, Howard University will conduct clinical trials in several African nations for drugs treating addition, HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other diseases.
Howard University Engineering Students Spending the Summer Conducting Research in Africa
In Cameroon, Howard students will use wireless networks to collect seismic data. In Senegal, the research will focus on HIV resistance to antiretroviral drugs. In South Africa, Howard University students will conduct experiments with silicon detectors in nuclear physics laboratories.
Howard University Awards 96 Ph.D.s
This year, 16 Ph.D.s were awarded in engineering or the physical sciences. There were 31 Ph.D.s awarded in the arts and humanities, 25 in the biological and life sciences, and 24 in the social sciences.
Gracie Lawson-Borders Named Dean of the School of Communications at Howard University
She is the former associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wyoming, where she also was professor of communication and journalism. Earlier she was the director of the African American and Diaspora Studies program at the University of Wyoming.
HBCUs Showing the Biggest Improvements in Black Student Graduation Rates
In 1998 the Black student graduation rate at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was 47 percent. Today, the latest graduation rate figures shows that 64 percent of entering students at Howard earn their degree within six years. This is an impressive 17 percentage point gain.
Howard University Breaks Ground on Its Interdisciplinary Research Building
The new, 81,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Research building will include laboratories, classrooms, "clean rooms," offices, and support facilities. The bottom floor of building will have space for retail outlets.

This year there are 21 graduates from Howard University in Washington, D.C., working in the Peace Corps. Since the Peace Corps was established in 1961, 204 Howard graduates have served.
Howard University Boosts Financial Aid for Students in Need
The university has added $600,000 to need-based financial aid programs for the current year. About 400 students, including some graduating seniors, will receive funds under the program.
Howard University Announces Plans for a Major New Residential Complex
The new housing will have room for 1,360 students and will include social areas, game rooms, laundry areas, and study places as well as meeting rooms, classrooms, and offices. The $107 million project is expected to be completed by August 2014.
In Memoriam: James Madison Nabrit III, 1932-2013
He was a prominent civil right attorney who argued several important cases involving education before the U.S. Supreme Court. His father, James M. Nabrit Jr. was president of Howard University in the 1960s.
