When she takes office on August 1, Karol V. Mason will be the first woman and the first person of color to serve as president of the college. She served as an assistant attorney general during the Obama administration and was the director of the Office of Justice Programs.

The six university partners - including historically Black North Carolina Central University - will be conducting research in their local communities on arrests and resolutions of criminal charges on offenses such as shoplifting, fraud, petty theft, forgery, and drug possession.

The honorees are William Jelani Cobb, an associate professor of history and director of the Africana Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut, and Christine Grant, a professor of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University.
