In Memoriam: Sybil Haydel Morial, 1932-2024
When pursuing her graduate education in the 1950s, Haydel Morial was denied enrollment at Tulane University and Loyola University because of her race. She went on to become an active member of the civil rights movement and advocate for voting rights in New Orleans and held administrative posts at Xavier University of Louisiana.
New Dean Appointments for Four Black Scholars
The new deans are Glenn Chambers at Michigan State University, Valerie Holmes at Texas State University, Esther Ntuli at Idaho State University, and Sheryl Haydel at Loyola University New Orleans.
Five African Americans Appointed to University Administrative Positions
The new administrative appointments are Katrece Boyd at North Carolina Central University, Anthony Jones at Loyola University New Orleans, Gerald Shields at Southeastern Missouri State University, Jordan Jones at the University of Washington, and Jasmine Buxton at West Chester University.
In Memoriam: Edgar Lawrence Chase III, 1949-2024
Chase dedicated over twenty years of his career to historically Black Dillard University in New Orleans, where he served as dean of business and vice president of facilities, planning, and management.
Five Black Faculty Members Named MacArthur Fellows
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation recently announced the 20 latest recipients in its fellowship program, commonly referred to as “genius grants.” Of this year's 20 winners, five are Black scholars with current ties to the academic world.
Xavier Cole Selected as the First African American President of Loyola University New Orleans
Dr. Cole has been serving as vice president for student affairs at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Before joining the staff at Marquette in 2016 he was vice president for student affairs at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Earlier, he was assistant vice president for student development at Loyola University of Maryland.
