Dr. Bates taught physics and electrical engineering at Stanford University for over two decades. He was the first Black faculty member to earn tenure in Stanford's School of Engineering.

Appointed to new administrative posts are Roberto E. Bryan Jr. at Fayetteville State University, Alycia Marshall at the Community College of Philadelphia, Gloria Walker at Florida A&M University, Ronald Gray at Manhattan College, Alayna Hayes at Vanderbilt University, Brian James at the University of North Carolina, and Amanda Slaughter at Bethel University in Indiana.

Gregory Washington was appointed to a second five-year term as dean of engineering at the University of California, Irvine, and Cheryl Harrison was appointed dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York.
