Whisenhunt is slated to assume the presidency of Fresno City College in July. She has extensive experience with California community colleges, including her current role as president of Grossmont College.
Dorothy Smith taught at Long Beach City College, Grossmont Community College, and later San Diego City College, where she was a professor for 24 years. Smith also lectured at San Diego State University. She was the first Black woman to be elected to public office in San Diego, serving on the school board for nearly eight years.
Whisenhunt has been serving as vice president of student services at San Diego City College. She served as interim president of the college in 2016 and 2017. Whisenhunt has been on the staff at the college since 2001.
Denise Whisenhunt has been serving as vice president for student services. She is expected to serve as interim president for up to a year. The college enrolls about 17,000 students. African Americans make up 12 percent of the student body.
