Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, announced that it will rename its College of Media, Arts and Humanities after Gwen Ifill, the noted journalist and Simmons College alumna who died in 2016.

Simmons College, a historically Black educational institution in Louisville, announced that the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky will establish offices on campus and begin to offer a master of divinity degree at the college. The first students are expected to enroll for the Spring 2018 semester.

The honorees are Em Claire Knowles of Simmons College in Boston, Tressie McMillan Cottom of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Robert A. Winn of the University of illinois at Chicago.

Gwen Ifill was a celebrated newspaper reporter and pioneering PBS television anchor who moderated two vice presidential debates. A graduate of Simmons College, Ifill held honorary degrees from 20 institutions of higher learning.

Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland is honoring alumna and congressional representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones. LaDonna Christian of Simmons College in Boston was named Nurse Educator of the Year and the late Professor Clement Alexander Price is being remembered by Rutgers University-Newark.

An energy company initially had pledged to transfer ownership of an old distillery building and four acres of land to Simmons College as part of the deal to win approval of the project from the city of Louisville. The college had planned to convert the abandoned building into student housing.

The honorees are Stephanie Luck of the University of Arkansas, the late Levi Watkins at Vanderbilt University, Clara Adams of Morgan State University, Anthony B. Pinn of Rice University, William F. Tate of Washington University in St. Louis, and Em Claire Knowles of Simmons College.

In an era where the number of historically Black colleges and universities is decreasing due to financial difficulties, Simmons College of Kentucky adds a new name to the list of the nation's HBCUs.
