In 2023, the Supreme Court banned the consideration of race in the college admissions process. An exception was made for the nation's military academies, but that was before the election of Donald Trump as president. Now the academies have abandoned their affirmative action programs.

Christopher B. Howard, a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, is president of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, one of the few all-male colleges in the United States.

He had taught engineering at the University of Denver since 1987.

Nationwide, the Black student college graduation rate is about 20 percentage points lower than the rate for White students. But at the U.S. service academies the racial gap is much lower.
