The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, is the first service academy to undergo the Equity Scorecard process developed by the Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California.

Since 2012, Dr. Ellis has been serving as chief of staff and education operations manager for the U.S. Department of Defense Dependents' School in Seoul, South Korea. Earlier she was an associate dean at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

In 1966, Merle Smith was the academy's first Black graduate. Today 5 percent of the cadets are Black.
