The grant will consist of $18.5 million that will be earmarked for 3,000 merit-based scholarships for African American undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students and $6.5 million to support the United Negro College Fund and its member institutions.
Dr. Reid has been serving as senior vice president of research, innovation, and member college engagement for the United Negro College Fund. Earlier he was associate dean for undergraduate education at MIT.
Under the pilot program, 13 college juniors from United Negro College Fund member institutions will be hired as paid interns for one semester at art museums across the country.
The 2013 UNCF•MERCK Fellows in the biological sciences receive awards ranging from $25,000 for undergraduate scholarship recipients to $92,000 for recipients of postdoctoral fellowships.
Alabama State University, Prairie View A&M University, St. Augustine College, Paine College and North Carolina Central University are involved in the UNCF project.
Shoppers at Kroger Food Stores in North Texas now have the opportunity to contribute to the United Negro College Fund from now through September 10. Coin canisters have been placed at all checkout counters to encourage shoppers to deposit contributions to help students at the UNCF’s 39 member colleges and universities.
