In Memoriam: Bertha Maxwell-Roddey, 1930-2024
In 1970, Dr. Maxwell-Roddey became the second African-American to be hired as a full-time faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. One year later, she became the founding director of the university's Africana studies department.

Dr. Pam Jackson has been on the staff at the university for almost 13 years and has been serving as interim provost since December 2017. Earlier, she was dean of the of College of Business and Economics at Fayetteville State University.
Akin Ogundiran Named Editor-In-Chief of the African Archaeological Review
Dr. Ogundiran is a professor of Africana studies, anthropology, and history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The journal focuses on African archaeology, including topics such as the emergence of modern humans and the earliest manifestation of human culture.

Derrick Griffith, dean of student affairs at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York, was one of eight victims in a horrific railroad accident in Philadelphia on May 12.
The New Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University
Mario Azevedo, a native of Mozambique, has been serving as professor and interim chair of the department of history and philosophy at the university. Previously, he taught for 20 years at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
