The University of North Florida in Jacksonville has introduced the Holmes Scholarship program with the aim to increase the number of teachers from underrepresented groups who, in return for financial aid, commit to serving in the local public schools.

The Hope and History Mural Project, an initiative of the University of North Florida’s Center for Urban Education and Policy (CUEP), is involving students, local leaders, and area artists to produce a mural in a public space that tells the story of what is now called "Ax Handle Saturday."

In 1995, Nathaniel Glover was elected as the first African American sheriff in Florida in more than 100 years and the first African American sheriff in the history of Jacksonville. He was named the 29th president of Edward Waters College in 2011.

The new institute is one of only two centers focusing on issues of race in the Florida state university system and the only one that focuses on research. The institute will sponsor six research symposiums this year.

Professor Armstrong-West had served on the faculty at Edward Waters College since 2008. Earlier, she was assistant dean of students at the University of Texas at Austin and dean of academic programs at Rutgers University.

JeffriAnne Wilder was promoted to associate professor of sociology and granted tenure at the University of North Florida and Thurman D. Hollins was named interim director of bands at North Carolina Central University in Durham.

The three finalists are Thomas J. Elzey, an executive vice president at The Citadel, E. Newton Jackson, associate provost at the University of North Florida, and Leonard A. McIntyre, interim dean of the College of Education at South Carolina State University.
