Gilda Barabino Selected to Lead the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Gilda Barabino is the president of the Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. She was the first African American woman admitted to the graduate program in chemical engineering at Rice University. In 1986, she was the fifth African American woman in the nation to obtain a doctorate in chemical engineering.
Loren Blanchard Appointed the Seventh President of the University of Houston-Downtown
Dr. Blanchard has been serving as executive vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the California State University System. Earlier, he was provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Xavier University in New Orleans.

New research from the scholars at the University of Minnesota, George Mason University, and Harvard University finds that Black newborns’ in-hospital death rate is a third lower when Black newborns are cared for by Black physicians rather than White physicians.
In Memoriam: Paul L. Gaines, 1932-2020
In 1958, Gaines earned a master's degree in counseling at what is now Bridgewater State University and that same year joined the staff at the educational institution as assistant to the president for minority affairs and affirmative action.

Dr. Torrey Wilson has been serving as associate professor of clinical psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology of Argosy University. Earlier in his career, Dr. Wilson was department chair for clinical psychology at Adler University in Chicago.

Dereck Rovaris Named President of American Association of Blacks in Higher Education
Since 2014, Dereck J. Rovaris Sr. has served as vice provost for diversity at Louisiana State University. Earlier, he was associate vice chancellor for academic and multicultural affairs at the Louisiana State University Heath Sciences Center in New Orleans.
Xavier University of Louisiana Teams Up With the University of Southern California
Xavier University of Louisiana has partnered with the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California to create a pipeline program for students studying physical therapy. Xavier students can apply to the program in the spring of their sophomore year.
Larissa Littleton-Steib Named Chancellor of Delgado Community College in New Orleans
Since 2016, Dr. Littleton-Steib has served as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College in Louisiana. Earlier in her career, she served in various roles at Delgado Community College including vice chancellor of workforce development and dean of technical education.
Norman C. Francis Receives the 2019 Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame
Established at the University of Notre Dame in 1883, the Laetare Medal was conceived as an American counterpart of the Golden Rose, a papal honor that dates from the 11th century. The award honors an individual who "has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church, and enriched the heritage of humanity.”

For the past six years, Dr. Walter has served as an administrator at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, most recently as the executive vice president of enrollment management, student success, and institutional relations. Prior to that, she was an administrator at Delgado Community College in New Orleans.

The new core curriculum reduces the mandated course requirements from 60 hours to 40 hours. The streamlined core curriculum offers students greater opportunities to pursue minor degrees, certificates, double majors, and to take classes outside of their chosen degree path.
