According to JBHE's account, Scott's latest gift to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania makes the institution the nineteenth HBCU to receive a major donation from the billionaire philanthropist during the fall 2025 semester.
“If anyone ever doubts the difference one person can make, look no further than MacKenzie Scott and how her generosity will resonate across generations,” says Dr. Monique Guillory, President of Dillard University, which received a $19 million gift from Scott. Xavier University of Louisiana received a $38 million donation.
Historian Edmond W. Davis notes that “no single donor in American history — not Rockefeller, Carnegie, Mellon, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Buffett, Musk, nor Gates — has ever invested more directly and broadly into Black higher education than MacKenzie Scott.” But some HBCUs that need money the most are not sharing in the bounty.
MacKenzie Scott has made record-breaking donations to North Carolina A&T State University, Bowie State University, Philander Smith University, and Prairie View A&M University. In just the past two months, the billionaire philanthropist has invested nearly $800 million in direct support of historically Black colleges and universities.
In less than two months, MacKenzie Scott has donated over $600 million in direct support of historically Black colleges and universities. The latest HBCUs to receive investments from the billionaire philanthropist are Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Voorhees University, Winston-Salem State University, and Norfolk State University.
Howard University, Virginia State University, Clark Atlanta University, and Spelman College are the latest HBCUs to receive major gifts from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. In just the past month, she has made record-breaking donations to eight HBCUs and the UNCF, building on the hundreds of millions of dollars in funding she bestowed to HBCUs in 2020.
Over the past week, billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated $38 million to Alabama State University, $42 million to Alcorn State University, and $38 million to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. These gifts mark the largest single donations ever received by each institution.
Scott's latest donation is her second major gift to Morgan State University, bringing her total investment in the HBCU to $103 million in just five years.
MacKenzie Scott has donated $70 million to the United Negro College Fund. The organization will leverage the gift to bolster the endowments at its 37 member institutions.
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in South Los Angeles, one of the nation’s four historically Black medical schools and the only HBCU west of Texas has received a $20 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This one-time gift represents the largest private donation in the history of the university.
MacKenzie Scott donated $40 million to Howard University and $30 million to Hampton University. Tuskegee University, Xavier University in New Orleans, and Morehouse College each received $20 million. Spelman College, the United Negro College Fund, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund also received donations.
