Xavier University, the historically Black educational institution in New Orleans, has received a patent for a new drug formulation that aims to improve methods for treating pain and heroin addiction.
The new formulation is a long-acting method for using buprenorphine to combat addiction. Currently, the drug, which is also a potent painkiller, is given daily at clinics to prevent abuse. But the new method developed by the College of Pharmacy, allows health professionals to administer the drug one every three or six months.
