Saint Augustine University Transitioning to Exclusively Online-Learning in April

Historically Black Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, is transitioning to full remote-learning in April. The university has asked all students to move out by April 3.

The move to online-learning comes in the midst of an accreditation and financial crisis at Saint Augustine’s University. Currently, the university is $20 million in debt and facing a 90-day arbitration with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools regarding its accreditation status.

In response to the challenges facing Saint Augustine’s University, various alumni and support groups have spoke out about their dissatisfaction with how the school has been managed in recent years. In December, a petition was started calling for the immediate resignation of the university’s board of trustees. It currently has over 1,700 signatures.

“The call for resignation does not come lightly but stems from deep concern about preserving the integrity and future prospects of our cherished institution,” the petition reads. “This is not just about us as individuals; it’s about protecting an institution that serves as an educational lifeline for many students who might otherwise be left behind.”
