New Faculty Positions for Four African American Scholars

Charles Bell has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the department of criminal justice sciences at Illinois State University. His research explores how out-of-school suspension, seclusion, restraint, and school safety measures impact students, parents, and teachers. He has authored several publications including Suspended: Punishment, Violence, and the Failure of School Safety (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2021).

Dr. Bell is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he majored in psychology. He received his master’s degree in school psychology from Michigan State University before returning to Wayne State to earn his Ph.D. in sociology.

Danielle Wood has been promoted to associate professor in the program in media arts and sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She holds a joint appointment with the department of aeronautics and astronautics and is the founding director of MIT’s Space Enabled Research Group.

Dr. Wood holds four degrees from MIT: a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, a master’s degree in technology policy, a second master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics, and a Ph.D. in engineering systems.

Robert Gooding-Williams has been named the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. His academic pursuits center around the intersection of philosophy and Black studies. He has authored several books including In the Shadow of Du Bois: Afro-Modern Political Thought in America (Harvard University Press, 2009).

Dr. Gooding-Williams holds a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale.

Maurice Dawson Jr. has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of information technology and management at the Illinois Institute of Technology, making him the first African American to earn tenure in the institute’s College of Computing. In addition to his teaching role, he serves as director of the Center for Forensics and Cyber Security Education.

Dr. Dawson holds a Ph.D. in hyper-connectivity from London Metropolitan University and a doctor of computer science degree from Colorado Technical University.
