The United States Department of Health and Human Services has appointed Andrea A. Hayes Dixon as chair of the Scientific Management Review Board. The board supervises and reviews the operations of all scientific research programs within the federal department. Dr. Hayes Dixon’s appointment is effective immediately and continues through June 2026.
Since 2022, Dr. Hayes Dixon has served as the first Black woman dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University, a historically Black institution in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the Howard faculty, she served as surgeon-in-chief, chief of pediatric surgery, and professor of pediatric surgery and surgical oncology at the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. Earlier in her career, she was the section chief of pediatric surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
“The Scientific Management Review Board has made significant strides in improving the oversight and management of scientific research programs,” said Dr. Hayes Dixon. “I look forward to contributing to the board’s continued success as we work to advance scientific discovery and enhance public health.”
Dr. Hayes Dixon received her bachelor’s degree in religion and medical degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She has the distinct honor of being the first African American woman to become a board-certified pediatric surgeon.
