California State University, Northridge Acquires Archives of Photojournalist Vera Jackson

The Tom & Ethel Bradley Center at California State University, Northridge, has acquired a collection of photographs taken by Vera Jackson to add to the university’s existing archive of materials regarding African American photojournalists.

In the 1940s, Vera Jackson was the only woman photographer on the staff of The California Eagle, the oldest Black newspaper in Los Angeles. She photographed several prominent African Americans in the Los Angeles area, including Hattie McDaniel and Jackie Robinson, among others. She also complied several featured series regarding the Black community in Los Angeles.

Later in life, Jackson transitioned to teaching. During her career in education, she continued her work as a photojournalist with various magazines and exhibits. She passed away in 1999.
