Black Americans Own Three Percent of Employer Business in the United States

The United States Census Bureau has recently released new data on the characteristics of employer businesses in America. The report, based on the 2023 Annual Business Survey, covers information on American businesses that had paid employees in 2022.

In 2022, there were roughly 5.9 million employer firms in the United States. An estimated 194,585 of these firms were owned by Black Americans, equating to just over 3 percent of all employer businesses in 2022. These Black-owned businesses had an estimated $211.8 billion in receipts over the course of 2022. Black-owned employer firms in 2022 employed about 1.6 million employees with an annual payroll of $61.2 billion.
