Two Black Scholars to Lead Faculty Affairs at Universities

Walter Parrish has been appointed assistant vice provost for faculty affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

With over 17 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Parrish most recently served as director of diversity and inclusion for the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Earlier, he worked in student affairs for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. His teaching experience includes adjunct faculty positions with Seton Hall University in New Jersey and Widener University in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Parrish is a graduate of Millersville University in Pennsylvania, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He holds a master’s degree in higher education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Adanna J. Johnson has been named associate chief academic officer for faculty affairs at the University of the District of Columbia, a historically Black educational institution.

Dr. Johnson comes to her new role from Georgetown University in D.C., where she was associate vice president for student equity and inclusion. She also taught as an affiliate faculty member in Georgetown’s psychology department and Institute for Environment & Sustainability. Earlier in her tenure, she was the senior associate dean of students and director of diversity, equity, and student success.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of historically Black Prairie View A&M University in Texas, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in psychology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
