Alvin R. Washington has been appointed chancellor of Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A Southern University Law Center faculty member since 2003, Washington is the managing professor for the center’s mediation clinic. He teaches courses on torts, legal research, statutory analysis, alternate dispute resolution, and legal negotiations. He also serves as an adjunct professor of conflict resolution with the Southern University Graduate School.
Washington’s career began in Long Beach, California, where he served as a Naval JAG officer and a military trial lawyer. He went on to serve as department head for the claims division of the U.S. Navy and as special assistant to the U.S. Attorney General for the Central District of California.
Following his military service, he moved to Louisiana to work as an assistant attorney general for general liability, road hazards, and civil rights cases. He was later appointed section chief of the civil rights division at the Louisiana Department of Justice. He has mediated hundreds of cases throughout his career, including work at the federal, state, and local level.
Professor Washington received his bachelor’s degree from Grambling State University and his law degree from Southern University Law Center.
