Robert Blaine III has been named president of the University of the Bahamas. He will assume his presidency on July 1.
Dr. Blaine comes to his new role from the National League of Cities, an organization dedicated to strengthening and advancing local governments. For the past four years, he has served as a senior executive and director of the NLC’s Center for Leadership, Education, Advancement, and Development and the Center for Municipal Practice. Previously, he spent three years as chief administrative officer for the City of Jackson, Mississippi.
Before his recent service in the public sector, Dr. Blaine had a robust background as a faculty member and administrator at two historically Black institutions in Mississippi. He previously served as associate provost of Tougaloo College. Earlier, he was a professor of music at Jackson State University for over a decade. While there, he held several leadership roles, including director of orchestral studies, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, special assistant to the provost for cyber learning, and dean of undergraduate studies and cyber learning.
Dr. Blaine holds a bachelor of music degree from Indiana University, a master of music degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a doctor of musical arts degree in performance and literature from the University of Rochester in New York.
