How Has the Black Population in Each U.S. State Changed Since 2010?

Pew Research Center has recently reported on the rate of change in the Black population in each U.S. state from 2010 to 2023.

According to their data, the Black population has grown the fastest in Utah, which has seen an 85 percent increase of Black residents as of 2023. Arizona, Minnesota, and Nevada are tied for the second most growth in Black residents (60 percent), followed by Washington (51 percent), Rhode Island (50 percent), Oregon (49 percent), Hawaii (48 percent), and Iowa (47 percent).

Over the same time period, only two states – Mississippi and Illinois – and the District of Columbia experienced a decline in Black residents. Mississippi and Illinois each saw a 2 percent decline, while D.C. experienced a one percent decline.

The Pew Research Center could not determine changes in the Black population of eight states (Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming) since they had fewer than 25,000 Black residents in 2010.
