Cornelius Johnson Named the Eighth President of Danville Community College in Virginia

After seven months of service as interim president, Cornelius Johnson has been named the eighth president of Danville Community College in Virginia. The school enrolls about 2,500 students, 31 percent of whom are Black.

Prior to his interim appointment in December 2024, Dr. Johnson served as vice president of academic affairs and student services at Danville Community College. With nearly three decades of professional experience, he has held leadership roles at El Centro College in Dallas, Lone Star College in Houston, and the Johnson Space Center. He also served as a faculty member with Indiana State University, the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Houston-Downtown, and the University of Houston.

“I’m excited and humbled to be appointed as the next president of this great college,” said Dr. Johnson. “DCC has a rich history and strong foundation in both workforce and transfer programs and plays a vital role in our city and region. I look forward to leading and working alongside our dedicated faculty, staff, and community partners as we write the college’s next chapter in advancing our mission and expanding opportunities for every student and community member we serve.”

Dr. Johnson began his postsecondary education at Seattle Central Community College. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, a master’s degree from Indiana State University, and a doctorate from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.
