Two Black Academic Leaders Who Have Been Named Provosts at HBCUs

Stevie J. Lawrence II has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. He will begin his new role on July 1.

An experienced HBCU administrator, Dr. Lawrence comes to his new role from Lincoln University of Missouri, where he was provost and vice president for academic affairs. Earlier in his career, he was founding dean of university college and interim vice provost for student success and enrollment management at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He also previously served as vice president for postsecondary education at the Southern Regional Education Board and director of college success services at the University of North Carolina System Office.

A three-time HBCU graduate, Dr. Lawrence received his bachelor’s degree in history from North Carolina A&T State University, master of public administration degree from North Carolina Central University, and Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Chanta M. Haywood became provost and vice president of academic affairs for Coppin State University in Baltimore on June 1. She had been serving in the role on an interim basis since last summer.

With over two decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Haywood has held academic leadership roles at institutions across Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Maryland, including several historically Black universities. Before joining Coppin State, she held vice presidential roles with Fort Valley State University and Albany State University in Georgia. As a scholar, she has authored numerous publications, including her book, Prophesying Daughters: Black Women Preachers and the Word, 1823-1913 (University of Missouri Press, 2016).

An HBCU graduate, Dr. Haywood earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Florida A&M University. She holds a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California, San Diego.
